Watain preparing a new album

The black metal band Watain will return to "Necromorbus studio" (Alvik , Sweden) with their producer Tore Stjerna on January 3, 2010 to record their new album, which should be available next summer.

The bassist/vocalist Erik Danielson recently discuss the choice of the group to record at Studio Necromorbus again : "I'd hate to come to a new studio and have to adapt to a new environment and a new producer. Necromorbus feels as much like home as our rehearsal place does. We are free to do what we want there and that is important as we always lock ourselves up in the studio during the recordings. Album recordings are holy to us, and that usually means rather chaotic and eventful days and nights of blood, fire and death."

Watain wins Swedish Grammis award

published on January 24, 2011 by Darren Cowan
On Monday, January 17, Swedish black metal overlords Watain took home the "Best Hard Rock" award for their Lawless Darkness full-length at Sweden's annual Grammis ceremony (the Swedish equivalent to the U.S. Grammy Awards).

Comments frontman Erik Danielsson: "I always pictured the criteria for entering the Grammy awards to be those of mainstream music in general; conformity, insipidity and commercial potential. In other words, I was quite surprised when we even got nominated. But considering all the blood, sweat and tears we have put into this, our life's mission, during the past 13 years, it is by all means an award well deserved. And no matter what the parameters were by which the jury made their decision, the Devil won again!

"Even if this music genre will always be one with adversity and wild hearted insanity as it's very roots," he continues, "the artistic value must be acknowledged not only on an underground level but in any cultural circumstance, high or low. Acknowledged I say, not necessarily appreciated. And in a country like Sweden it is about fucking time, for here it has been neglected and stupefied by the mass media for years, while legends such as Dissection and Bathory have been writing and releasing some of the most monumental albums in music history. The Grammy that we have won with Watain is a step towards rectification in that matter, and a sign that the artistry and infernal creativity that permeates Watain and this genre is being taken seriously. For that we are proud and delighted in accepting the award. As for it's market-value or importance in a "music industry context," we sincerely could not care less."

Lawless Darkness was released via Season Of Mist on June 7, recorded at Necromorbus Studio (Deathspell Omega, Funeral Mist, Ondskapt et al) in Alvik, Sweden and features cover art by Zbigniew M. Bielak.

In related news, Watain was also nominated in the P3 Gold Awards to be held this Saturday in the "rock/metal" category as well as the Manifest Awards on February 4 in the "rock" category.

Watain offers update from road

published on December 1, 2010 by Darren Cowan
Swedish black metal titans WATAIN have been setting North America ablaze with a sound and stage show that is a true assault to the senses. Touring in support of their Lawless Darkness full-length released via Season Of Mist earlier this year, the wild ride commenced in Pittsburgh on November 6 and has been sweeping its way across the country with relentless fury. Support bands, Goatwhore and Black Anvil, have helped make the tour package one of the most pummeling (and talked about) of the year.

Said WATAIN in a collective statement: "The Lawless Darkness Tour marches on relentlessly across the States. Greetings to the legions of hungry fiends that have come out so far, and to all of you who have brought us gifts and artifacts for the stage, you will not be forgotten! It has been a wild ride, yet it is far from over... Denial of the flesh; Denial of the cunt; we are the cold seed of Satanas!"

WATAIN's final U.S. performance of the tour will happen this Thursday at Santos Party House in New York City. Following the show is a scheduled meet and greet at Duff's in Brooklyn.

WATAIN "Reaping Death" single goes gold in Sweden

published on August 19, 2010 by Darren Cowan
"Reaping Death" the latest single from Swedish black metal battalion WATAIN, was certified gold in Sweden for sales in excess of 10,000 copies. Earlier this week, the band was awarded their gold record in Stockholm in the presence of press and various guests. Said frontman Erik Danielsson at the presentation: "'Reaping Death' is a song written as a tribute to the first murderer and Satanist, Cain. Through the murder of his brother Abel, he was the first to break the shackles of creation and went against the will of God. Therefore, he was pushed away and found his way to his true father, the serpent in the Garden of Eden, also known as Satan. To openly praise Cain, his origin, his works and his offspring is something that never would have been possible, say 300 years ago. 300 years ago they tied people such as us up and burned them alive. Now we are awarded gold discs and praise in the media. This is an encouraging proof that this road is leading to hell.

"Through black metal," he continued, "we now have a forum, in which we, without being persecuted and tortured, can celebrate the ancient ruin forces, revolutions and the gods of total liberation, and thus give them additional force. This gold disc is proof that the genre as such is one to be reckoned with, and with fire, fanaticism and passion as the driving force, we intend to take it even further, deep down in still unexplored abysses. We also would like to thank Sound Pollution, Season of Mist, Sweden Rock and 'Boss' at Black Mark."

Check out a photo of Danielsson with the award here:

"Reaping Death" comes off WATAIN's Lawless Darkness full-length released via Season Of Mist this past June. Lawless Darkness was recorded at Necromorbus Studio (Deathspell Omega, Funeral Mist, Ondskapt, Nominon, Unanimated et al) in Alvik, Sweden and features cover art by Zbigniew M. Bielak.

WATAIN announces North American tour with BEHEMOTH

published on August 3, 2010 by Darren Cowan
The time has come to announce the first leg of WATAIN's Lawless Darkness tour in North America. When the darkness of November falls, WATAIN will cross the Atlantic to set the continent aflame once again, this time with Behemoth on their upcoming Lawless States of Heretika Tour!

Set to strike in early December, the massive tour will be WATAIN's first full-on North American assault in support of their fourth full-length release Lawless Darkness, bringing their flagrantly evil, intense live rituals back to ravenous fans once again, joined by additional openers Withered and Black Anvil. This will also be the first North American WATAIN tour to feature a full live lineup, with E performing only vocally instead of covering bass or guitar duties as well. Prepare for invocations of the most perverse kind. Legions rise; harvest time has come!

Vocalist E comments on the upcoming filth: "It is with a scornful leer towards our enemies and a proudly risen cup of blood towards our devoted followers that we now reveal our plans for America in the fall. We have also managed to sort out the past problems we have had when it comes to the compromised lineup for US tours, which feels extremely good. The songs of Lawless Darkness truly demand a full lineup as well as my total submission to the vocal duties, which is exactly what they will get now. Watain is coming, in all its horrible glory, and it won't be pretty."
