Just before the rainy season strikes Japan, Chaotic Tapestry organized a new tour throughout all Japan, from Fukuoka to Sendai, with Tokyo being the final date. No less than 5 international bands joined, coming from as various horizons as Australia, France, Swiss and Sweden, accompanied for the whole tour by Gotsu Totsu Kotsu from Japan, and local bands in each city.

As Silence Breaks

Despite having missed the first bands, it is still early in the afternoon when As Silence Breaks gets on stage and the crowd is still softened. Originating from Sidney, Australia, the quintet was formed in 2005 and plays an hybrid of metalcore and melodic death metal, and are said to be inspired by At The Gates or Darkest Hour . The lights are colorful and As Silence Breaks knows how to play with the crowd and gradually warm them up.

Hypocras

Now gets on stage Hypocras, an ingenious and interesting concept of folk Viking metal led by 5 young guys from Geneva, Swiss, which debuted in their final form in 2008. Their corpse paint remind us of Turisas war paints, with black stripes on their faces. Their originality particularly lies in the flute, well mixed and intertwined with the other instruments and which musically truly brings an added value. They like playing between each other and are fundamentally trying to just have fun, and their partying spirit is contagious.

Serenity In Murder

The 6 young Japanese members of Serenity in Murder follow Hypocras on the stage to offer us a hell of a set. Already reviewed in these pages, the band surprises us by their level of maturity and professionalism despite their youth and short experience (only 2 years of formation and one album released in 2011). Led by Emi, the female singer whose growls have nothing to envy to the manliest vocalist, Serenity in Murder plays symphonic death metal supported by epic keyboards and two great guitarists.

Gotsu Totsu Kotsu

I had the pleasure to assist to many GTK shows in Tokyo, and this one was again worthy of their gigantic skills. They have an already long history and have been of a great impact in the Death / Thrash metal scene in Japan, being formed in 2000 in Kawagoe (near Tokyo) with their heavy and oppressive thrash metal, enhanced with Takahashi amazing guitar soli. Haruhisa Takahata, the leader and vocalist with the long beard, is very skilled at mastering the crowd and warming up its public, with many but always funny speaking. Inspired by the ancient traditional way of the samurai, Takahata fast-talking uses and abuses of his favorite comical lines “Arigataki shiawase” (profund thanks for ancient samurais) or “shizumare” (silence).

Gorod

Now is the turn for our French technical virtuoso of Gorod to occupy the Shibuya Cyclone with their Technical death metal, always bathed in all-red or very dark lights (which is always bad news for taking photos). With no less than 16 years of experience and four albums released, Gorod doesn’t have anything to prove anymore, and despite coming to Japan for their very first time, they seem to encounter a frank success and support from the Japanese crowd.
Ultra technical, I nearly had a musical orgasm on their last “Disavow your god” monument of instrumental mastery, closing their set.

Setlist of Gorod in Tokyo :
Birds of Sulphur
A Common Hope
Here Die Your Gods
The Axe of God
State of Secret
Carved in the Wind
Disavow Your God

The Crown

Now is time for the head of the bill to put an end to this great event. Originating from Sweden, The Crown plays a mix of death and thrash metal. In spite of a 5 years break in their activity, before reforming in 2009, The Crown has the longest activity of all bands present tonight, as they debuted as early as 1990 and released no less than 8 studio albums. The band finds a great support from the Japanese crowd tonight, all especially with their “deathexplosion” hit. The venue is tightly crowded, full of hundreds of metalheads packed in the small Cyclone which quickly gets very hot.
To sum up, Chaotic Tapestry offered us once again a great evening with bands from very diverse horizons, ranging from Death, Thrash, Metalcore to Folk Metal, fully satisfying everyone.

Setlist of The Crown in Tokyo :
Killingstar
The Poison
Deathexplosion
The Tempter and the Bible Black
Face of Destruction
Under the Whip
Blitzkrieg Witchcraft
Death by My Side
House of Hades
(Intro, tape)
Crowned in Terror
Total Satan
Encore:
