Interview with The Vision Bleak
The amazing band The Vision Bleak
has just served us his new album, Set Sail To Mystery
Another pure work of art !
Markus, the leader of this band was available for some questions...
Metalship : Hi Markus.
One of your several projects, The Vision Bleak, has just released a new album: Set Sail To Mystery. Can you introduce this project to our readers who may not know The Vision Bleak?
Well, I wouldn't call The Vision Bleak
a project. It's the center of my musical activities for almost 10 years
. We released 4 albums up to now all dealing with the subject of death, doom and horror. We call our muisc Horror Metal. It's atmospheric and has lots of energy.
Metalship : The Vision Bleak presents a really inspired an original band. The concept is always based on horror, darkness, romantic, etc. Where do you find inspiration years after years?
Well, I am a junkie for both classical, romantic literature by the likes of Lord Byron, Shelley, Keats, Poe or Blackwood but also love Weird Fiction Stories by Lovecraft or Clark Ashton Smith and Robert Bloch amongst others. And I really dig a good horror movie as well and am interested in basically everything dealing with the supernatural. As you see – there's a lot to draw inspiration from.
Metalship : For most of our readers, you are known as the musician of the mysterious and defunct Empyrium. Do you never think about a resurrection of this band?
Well, there might be signs of life by Empyrium
sooner than some might expect. Nothing more to say.
Metalship : You are involved in lots of musical projects, like Autumnblaze, Sun Of The Sleepless, Noekk, an so on. And all of them are very different. And you are also involved as sound producer, for Secrets Of The Moon for example. Can we say that music is in the center of your life? What are your other activities?
Yes, music is the center of my life. I am working daily in my recording studio (www.studioe.de
) producing other bands + I am having my own musical activities. There's very few days on which I don't work on music or don't think about. Besides music I am really into literature and basically any form of art. My sparetime is spent with my family.
Metalship : Contrary to other Metal bands, your music doesn’t seem to deliver a political or religious message. Do you think you are doing Art for Art’s sake?
Politics and religion have in my book nothing in common with art. Art is for your soul and not for your intellect.
Metalship : Where do you find all your influences?
As mentioned above, Literature and movies. Musically, basically everything from Dead Can Dance
can be inspiring to us.
Metalship : In The Vision Bleak, the lyrics are about horror, darkness, vampires, fear… What about the lyrics of your new album? Is it a concept album?
Well, actually we never had a song about vampires, but our lyrics all deal with the supernatural and the psychological depths of a good hoor story. There's more to it than just the “storyline” but I leave that up to the readers/listeners to find out themselves. The new album isn't a concept album in the sense that it tells a story from beginning to the end
, it's a rather a collection of short stories under
the banner of mysteries.
Metalship : In what way can we say the new album is different from the other according to you?
The album is typical for us when it comes to its atmospherics but I really think it's the most diverse record we did so far. Iot features up tempo aggressive songs full of energy and darkness as well as very mellow slow tunes that are very atmospheric.
Metalship : The promotional pictures that come with all The Vision Bleak album are always very dark and amazing. Is it the same artist who takes photos and make them old, and decaying? Is the image of the band important for you?
On this album we worked together with angst-im-wald.com for the photographies. The editing and graphic design for all our releases are done by our old comrade Lukasz Jaszak. A genious graphic designer who knows exactly what we want. For us Music/lyrics/design are all very important factors. If one of them is weak it will eaken the atmospherics of the whole album – thus we take a lot of care in all of the above.
Metalship : In image and music, you always try to convey lots of feelings like fear. Is it important for you to touch the listener and to create a real ‘musical theater’?
Yes, it is.
Metalship : The music of The Vision Bleak is very complex and you are only two musicians in the band. Who are the musicians who follow you for stage performances?
Our live drummer is Thelemnar of Secrets Of The Moon
, our second guitar player Josi Maddox from The Hellectirc and our bassplayer is our old mate Marco who is also active in the goth metal band Dievotion.
Metalship : It is strange, but in your music, we can fell that you are close to Black Metal scene. Close to Secrets Of The Moon, the drummer of Antaeus, Thorns, etc. What are your relationships toward Black Metal? Is it possible to see you involved in a Black Metal band one day?
I have gronw up with the norwegian scene in 92/93 so no wonder we have a black metal feeling to a certain extent. I still love some of the bands from back in the day, like old Darkthrone
, Master's Hammer, Mayhem
, old Emperor
and so on. I had my own black metal project called Sun Of The Sleepless
in the late 90s as well.
Metalship : What albums did you recently appreciate?
The last albums of Alice In Chains
and Paradise Lost
are quite high on my list right now. Masters Of Reality, Dead Can Dance
, Secrets Of The Moon
and De Mysteries Dom Sathanas from Mayhem
are regulars in my playlists as well.
Metalship : Will The Vision Bleak come in France to present this new album?
When I answer this we just came home from the first european tour for “Set Sail...” - we had a gig in Paris which was fantastic by the way! Great audience! Thanks to everybody who attented!
