:: Interview with Noctem
Interview with Noctem
"Divinity", the first Noctem
's album, was born in April 2009. But the Spanish guys are already active since 2001 with many concerts throughout Europe in their carreer.
This first LP is offering a black / death metal with brutality, melody and technicity. Christos Antoniou from the Greek band Septic Flesh
was the "guest-star" on this CD.
is a quite promising band you should discover as soon as possible!
Interview with Exo (guitar) and Beleth (vocals) for further explanations ...
Metalship : Hails Noctem ! You’re not well known in France yet. Could you introduce the band and its origins ?
Exo (guitars) : Noctem
started in 2001, after different line up changes we released our first mcd « Unholy Blood » in 2003, our second demo would be a live show recorded in 2004, another line up change happened until the record of our last mcd album «God among slaves» in 2007 ; presenting it we did an European Tour in 2008 in countries like Portugal, France, UK, Belgium, Italy...And in 2008 we signed with our label Noisehead Records for recording our debut album : « Divinity » in 2009.
Metalship : I found that « Divinity » was a varied album, with a lot of diverse things into it (like black metal but also death metal, thrash metal, etc.). What are the main musical influences of Noctem (bands, genres) ?
Beleth (vocals): Genres... Metal in general. Although we focus our music in extrem metal styles like death, thrash and a minimum of black metal.
I could tell you a few bands, principally Behemoth
, Dimmu Borgir
, Keep of Kalessin
Metalship : And what are your main non-musical influences, in arts and in life more generally ?
Exo (guitars) : Lovecraft, H.R. Giger, David Fincher...
Metalship : As a Spanish band, what do you think about the musical scene in Spain (and especially the metal scene of course). More generally, which bands do you find the most impressive or the most worthy to be discovered today (in Spain and outside Spain) ?
Exo (guitars) : Spain has been an empty country for a long time, talking about metal ; but since a few years ago everything is growing up and I trust
in an evolutioned scene here, with festivals like Kobetasonik and bands like Angelus Apatrida, Dawn of tears
Metalship : Are the lyrics important for Noctem and what are they supposed to express ? Did you ever think to have your lyrics in Spanish ? (and if no or if yes, why ?)
Beleth (vocals) : Yes, the lyrics are very important. First of all we have a message and we want to spread te word everywhere. Divinity is a conceptual album that treats about Atlantis, the lost continent dissapeared because of te ire of the gods, it also treats about its polytheistic society. It is a fascinating story for sending our message of destruction and hate
to this fucking world . I based it in our experiences day by day, in how we confront all those battles in every dawn of our life.
No, we will not write lyrics in our language... Spanish is not the right way to send our message.
Metalship : Noctem was created in 2001 but you released your first LP « Divinity » only in April 2009. Why such a long time to do it ?
Exo (guitars) : Well... we suffered a lot of line up changes, new musical influences until arrive to this point, we could record an album 3 years ago, but it would not sound like « Divinity »at all, we suffered an evolution during these years of experience.
Metalship : You worked with Christos Antoniou from Septic Flesh on this album. Could you describe how came this experience to happen, and what do you remember from it ?
Exo (guitars) : We went to one of his shows with his band Septic Flesh
here in Valencia, they were supporting Vader
, a really great performance. We gave him one of our demos and months later we talked about the idea of the collaboration, cause I was obsessed with his orchestral arrangements in Communion, he liked the idea and finally it worked.
Metalship : What is your best live or touring experience and which bands would you like to tour with in the future ?
Beleth (vocals) : I remember a lot of shows and experiences in the last year, destroying everything up the stage, drinking a lot after the show (laughs), sharing very « metal » moments with the other bands and the metalheads. We do not have special preferences but it would be an honor touring with bands like Behemoth
or Dimmu Borgir
Metalship : What does Noctem plan for the future ?
Beleth (vocals) : Well... in December we will be supporting Napalm Death
in their spanish tour, we will play at Dirty Fest in our city and we are preparing now ourselves for touring Europe again with very good bands in 2010 . But in special we are waiting to spread our madness for all France as soon as possible.
Metalship : I leave you the final words to conclude this interview.
Exo (vocals) : We will tour soon your country presenting our debut album : « Divinity », so be prepared metalheads for the Noctem
