Interview with Tragodia

Tragodia is an italian Metal band, who just released a good album "Mythmaker".

Riccardo Tonoli, guitarist of the band, has taken a few minutes to answer our questions...

Metalship : Tragodia exist since a quite long time, but is not well known. Can you
present your band and his history?

Tragodia exist since the 1996; after a demo tape and an EP, we released our first full length album, ‘The Promethean Legacy’ in 2007 for the label Dark Balance; during the next 3 years we play around to promote the album and in the meantime we had some change in the line up and that is why our second work ‘Theomachy’ (released by the Italian label MyGraveyard Productions) was released much later, at the beginning of the 2012.
Now that the line up was quite stable, during the promotional tour of the new work we decided to produce a new album in a short time, not more than two years from the release of ‘Theomachy’, so we started straight to write new stuff and so began the ‘Mythmaker’ production. ‘Mythmaker’ was released on November 1st, 2013 via Kolony Records.

Metalship : « Mythmaker » is your third album. Your music has really changed since
the first album. Could you explain this evolution?

I think there are two ways that explain this evolution; people changes, and this is reflected in what a musician or a composer has to tell; of course the music you are used to listen to, has a big influence in what you can write, but your moods, your feelings change during the years and this is transfigured in your music. At the beginning the gothic influences, keyboards and dark atmospheres were the guide lines of our music; in ‘Theomachy’ you can feel the first really big change; more aggressive, more guitar works, new voice…
Other thing that explain this evolution in my opinion is the line up change; everyone brings something new at the project; his own experience, his own skills and taste, and all of this I think let an album like ‘Mythmaker’ take his shape.

Metalship : Your precedent album was presented in 2012 and “Mythmaker” in 2013.
I’m very surprised by this very short time. It seems that any details, any
parts, any effects have enjoyed special attention. How much time have you
taken for the writing process?

Thanks for your words; Yes, we decided to release the new Album not too much after ‘Theomachy’ so we set some deadlines to reach the goal; we decided to do it fast enough but obviously with attention on all its parts.
We started the preproduction session in our own studio at the end of November 2012 an we entered the studio for the production 3 months after, in March 2013 with many of the songs almost ready. We completed the songs during the production. We had some separate recording sessions because of each band’s member work commitments, and we finished the recording at the end of June; the mix took all the July month and at the beginning of August the mix reached the Sterling Sounds studios in New York for the Mastering.

Metalship : How were the studio sessions? Do you have met any problems?

We worked with the producer Daniele Mandelli (Forgotten Tomb, Dark horizon,…) at Elfo Studio, Piacenza, Italy, with whom we worked also on our previous albums; he knows our targets and our tastes so the work was very comfortable and flowing but not without some ordinary problems of course; some delays due to some problems during the editing, time finding the sounds of guitars, bass, etc… and problems with the internet line during the upload for the mastering session… but in the end everything went well. Nothing really remarkable.

Metalship : “Mythmaker” is a very good album, with some melodic and heavy parts. When
I’ve heard it, I was thinking of some bands like Nevermore
or Iced Earth for example. Could you speak about your influences?
What are the bands or artists you love and/or are listening these days?

Thanks again.
Some of us are big Nevermore supporters indeed. I guess the guitar riffing could sometimes remind of Nevermore, or the very fact that we have mainly clean vocals built upon a very tight and modern sounding rhythmic session. There are many other bands that played a big role in our musical background: we’ve always been a huge fans of the British doom-Goth bands of the Nineties, especially Paradise Lost and My Dying Bride, but also Katatonia and other great Scandinavian bands: I feel that you can still perceive some features of that sound in Tragodia, though heavily diluted and merged with other elements.
Personally I’m very excited about In Flames upcoming new album; I recently read they entered the studio in order to record it. I’m a huge fan of In Flames and cannot wait to listen to their new stuff since I loved the latest album. In this period I’m listening to some newly released albums, especially: Surgical steel (Carcass), Fortress (Alter Bridge), Impermanent Resonance (James Labrie), and some older stuff like Koloss (Meshuggah), This Godless endeavor (Nevermore), etc…

Metalship : Could you present the lyrics and the themes of “Mythmaker”?

Both the themes and the lyrics on Mythmaker are “epic”: they talk about past times, classical age and especially the ancient Greek world, with its myths and literature playing a big role and happily tying in with the music. Themes such as decline, decadence, fall of human societies through the ages are recurrent in our lyrics; I would say that we are keen on a decadent way to being epic; we sing more about loss and failure than victories.

Metalship : What are the first reactions about your third album?

We are very pleased so far for the work of promotion and distribution our new label did; we also have seen a quickly increase in the followers of the social network during this period; someone write us their comments, others contact us asking for lyrics, info, etc… so this is what move us to keep up and go on with our passion. I think Kolony Records is another small step increasing our band; The promotion started two months before the release date and so far there are a lot of reviews and interviews like never had before for our previous albums; I have to say also unexpectedly all positives, so thanks to all the writers and the readers to give us some space and chances to promote ‘Mythmaker’.

Metalship : Have you some plans for touring?

Yes. We recently had our first German show ever in Passau and it was a blast! We have two more shows in Italy scheduled for the next weeks + another one in Munich, Germany and one in Innsbruck, Austria in December. Some shows to be confirmed; 2 in Germany and another 2 in Lyon, France in March/April 2014. We are working hard to schedule many more dates in Europe for 2014.

Metalship : Have you already some idea or perhaps much more for the future album?

Yes; we have already some ideas and also other 3-4 songs almost ready that were not in line with ‘Mythmaker’ style, so we decided not to record them for this album, but of course they will be recovered and renewed for the next one (I think now); we are also already thinking about where and how to record the new stuff, about new sounds, new themes, so… always in motion.

Metalship : I let you the last words…

Huge thanks to you for kindly letting me introduce Mythmaker to your readers: give Mythmaker a try: you might find it interesting; and please feel free to get back to us anytime to share your feelings about it; that would be much appreciated!
