Interview with Alestorm

Captain Chris of the mighty pirate metal bastards Alestorm gave up his afternoon sailing the seven seas to jump aboard out metal ship and talk to us about Alestorm's amazing new album entitled Back Through Time. Like all Alestorm albums, Chris tells us about just why the music is so barmy, and when we can be expecting a UK headlining tour.

Metalship : Let’s say one by one: Who we are, what we play in Alestorm and how the band started?

I'm Chris, I sing and play keyboards in Alestorm, and I'm an alcoholic. We started this band as a terrible joke 5 years ago, and it's got out of hand.

Metalship : What was your first experience of Metal?

A bunch of random nu metal bollocks, I guess. However the real turning point for me was when I heard symphonic black metal legends BAL-SAGOTH on the radio in 2001; from then I knew I wanted to make epic music.

Metalship : When did you start keyboard and singing?

I'm crazy kinds of middle class, so I was taking piano lessons as a kid. Yeah not very hardcore I know. I only started singing when we were recording the first demos for this band, and we realised our singer was rubbish, so I had to step infront of the mic and lay down my shitty voice.

Metalship : Why did you decide to do the whole Pirate themed metal?

I wrote one song about pirates once, and we played it at the first band rehearsal. We liked it, so I wrote another song about pirates, then BANG suddenly we were a pirate metal band. It was a terrible accident really.

Metalship : And why do you hate Viking’s so much? Cough Turisas Cough!

Nah vikings are cool. The kids that take this viking themed music too seriously, they're a bit silly though. We just wrote these songs about killing vikings to annoy them. Trollin', yo.

Metalship : What is different from Back Through Time to previous Alestorm releases?

It's 3 minutes longer, and has two more songs beginning with the letter "B" than the last one had. I call that progression. More drinking songs and references to midgets too.

Metalship : When writing Back Through Time was there any one main song writer or was it a team effort?

I did most of it myself, cos everyone else is lazy and too busy playing Xbox. Maybe next time round there'll be more contributions from the rest of the band, we'll see!

Metalship : Who designed the album artwork for Back Through Time? And why is there always a rat on your album covers, have you named him?

The artwork was once again done by the talented Ingo Romling, he did all our other stuff too. I think it's a rather nice cover. I dunno why there's a rat, but he's always there now so we just roll with it. His name is Barry Shitpeas, bytheway.

Metalship : Tell us about your video of the song Shipwrecked (Location, Story Line, Crew, The small guy playing the violin)?

We went to serbia. There were babes and a midget. We filmed them. Then we got really drunk. That was the fun bit. I guess there's a story about some guy who gets shipwrecked and then has this dream that he's on a party island, then he wakes up and it's all fake. Mostly I like the girls with lovely bums.

Metalship : You have a song called Rum which you played live to crowds on the Sabaton UK tour. Why did you choose that song to play from the new album?

Cos it's retardedly simple, and easy for us to play, and the crowd are able to sing along with it by the end of the first chorus. Perfect song to play live really.

Metalship : What is your favourite song to play live and why?

I like Captain Morgan's Revenge, cos it's really easy! We're all lazy bastards. We just wanna play easy songs and drink booze, haha.

Metalship : You are playing one date at the Heidenfest in the UK. That is London. Who else is playing on the bill and why are you not playing anywhere else in the UK? GRRRRR!

Nobody has booked us for any other shows in the uk. We can't play where we're not asked. It sucks, but there's nothing we can do about that. Anywaym there's a bunch of badass bands on this heidenfest, like Finntroll and Turisas and Arkona and basically every silly folk metal band ever. It's gonna be a drunken mess. Can't wait!

Metalship : When can we be expecting a full headlining UK tour to promote the Back Through Time album?

Maybe not until 2012. The UK tends to whine if you play there too often, so we're gonna go for the good ol' "treat em mean and keep em keen" approach. Can't wait to do our own headlining tour. We'll have mad kinds of stage props and stuff. We'll do loads of UK shows, esepcially in scotland and northern ireland, cos not many bands go there. We love playing the uk, really!

Metalship : If you could be in a super group with you on your instrument and vocals, who else would be in the band?

My vocals suck and i'm not very good at the keyboard. The future's not very bright for me. Maybe i'll join a punk band or something, that'd be cool. So yeah, NoFX + Me = Worlds Best Supergroup!

Metalship : Thank you for your time Chris, it has been a pleasure interviewing you. Can you give our readers a brief summary of the amazing new album? Back Through Time.

BACK THROUGH TIME IS GOOD AND IT IS OUT NOW AND IF YOU LIKE PIRATES OR BEING BADASS OR EATING FOOD SOMETIMES YOU SHOULD BUY IT NOW! Oh, and eat Scottish beef.
