Interview with Blessed by a Broken Heart

My hero, the guitar god Sean Maier from the Hair/Glam Hardcore band Blessed By a Broken Heart took his afternoon to answer these email questions, talking to Metal Ship about: The new Blessed By a Broken Heart album, his upbringing and his favourite guitar players. This interview is shredding good! Hail to the 666 fingered guitar maniac!

Metalship : Can you tell us a bit about yourself, like what hobbies you have as well as playing your music?

Ahoy shredheads my name is Sean i enjoy listening to music, making extrvagant sandwich arrangments, drinking fancy beers, and long walks on the beach during sundown...

Metalship : Tell us what you play in the band and who are the other guys?

Play lead guitar, Tyler slaps da bass, Slater hits things in time sometimes, Tony prances around shirtless and oh yea sings too, and our new rhym player Sam riffs raffs and picks up chicks with his brit accent.

Metalship : What was the first guitar you ever bought and what did you think of it?

My first guitar was a Mexican Fender fatstrat guitar. It had two single coils in the neck and middle postion and 1 humbucker in the bridge. I still pick it up and play it when im back home plays great!

Metalship : Which guitarists inspired you to play the guitar?

Surprisingly enough, what made me first pick up a guitar was a band called Bush, when I first stared, like 1998. I more or less wanted to look as cool as Gavin rosdale (That never happend) but I have probably since one-upped him on the axework. That was soon phased out by Metallica, Pantera and then Yngwie Malmsteen. It was all over from there; shred fever was upon me. From there i searched out every shrapnel artist or band with a smokin guitar player some others include...
• 1) Paul Gilbert
• 2) Nuno Bettencourt
• 3) Michael Lee Firkins
• 4) Richie Kotzen
• 5) Blues Saraceno
• 6) John Sykes
• 7) Greg Howe
• 8) Reb Beach
• 9) Joey Tafola
• 10) Jason Becker

Metalship : You are now endorsed by Carvin guitars which are not the most well known model in the world. Why did you decide to play these guitars over others?

I proudly play Carvin guitars... they are simply the most comfortable, best-playing guitars I've ever played. The company has a wide selection of woods to choose from, does astonishing finishes... simply top-of-the-line work at a fractional direct-sale price unmatched by other companies in my eyes. That unmatched direct price and custom shop mentality may come at the cost of them not being a heavy weight contender like more notable companies that can be found in your local sam ash or guitar center. But the most popular is not always the best playing guitar, i play what feels best not what's most popular.

Metalship : Your guitar playing is extremely talented and you can play very fast (As we can see on the last Blessed by a Broken Heart record) what techniques and exercise could you recommend to people who may want to play the guitar fast?

Depends on what your trying to acomplish we can pin point certain exersizes to work on specfic techniques like picking, legatto, or arpeggios. Lets talk alternate picking one of my favorites the key is slow and clean before fast. The first 2 intense rock Paul gilbert videos helped me a great deal back in the basement days. Theres also alot of great stuff to be found on youtube just search around. There are alot of different exercises to work on speed i give skype lessons online and private ones at shows when im available, hit me up! ( www.facebook.com/shredsean)

Metalship : Pedal to the Metal came out in 2008 and is Blessed by a Broken Heart’s 2nd album. Was the song writing a team effort or was there any one main writer?

On that album many of the basic song structures and a few of the whole songs were written by frank the drummer before i even joined in 05. I Helped wrtie some of the more 80's style riffs, put my touch on all the guitar parts and of course all the solos!

Metalship : Pedal to the Metal came out on Century Media, but I believe you aren’t on Century Media now. Will you be releasing your new 2011 album on any label or will it be released through yourselves?

We have signed with a new label we will be anouncing in a month or so stay tuned!!!

Metalship : Blessed by a Broken Heart is described as a Christian metalcore band. What Christian elements are there in the music?

Some songs have that element others do not. Songs where religious refrences can be heard on pedal are Carry on all the vereses, show me what you got, side by side, and blood on your hands just check out the lyrics in the cd insert or maybe there online somewhere.

Metalship : Ok, so Blessed by a Broken Heart’s new album is coming out in 2011. Can you tell us any specific details about it (Album Title, Song Titles, Release Dates, How it compares to other BBABH releases)?

More shred, more vocals, more keys, less breakdowns. Were moving further away from the metal core sound (personally i find it quite stale) and never what i was about as a writer. With me furthermore steping into a main writing force on this record it certainly reflects more of my influence than the previous album. The record will still have heavy tunes but a bit more classic heavy metal sound than moshcore heavy. Will still have an open string chuger or 2 on this album for those who still need a bit of there core fix. but i didnt write those parts ;).

Metalship : Can we be expecting a UK tour anytime soon? If so when?

We will be back to the UK for sure to tour this new album no plans of any kind are in place until we finish recording the record which we are curently in the process of.

Metalship : What’s next for the mighty Sean Shred outside of BBABH (Solo Project, Charity work, Discovering the cure for cancer)?

Well after i beat the end of the world rapture today ( may 21) I plan to finish up the rest of this album and keep on rocking!

Thanks for the interview Matt!
