Interview with Converge

Converge guitarist Kurt Ballou tells Metalship about touring; if he is not making records then he is trying to plan his busy life out. Kurt has released several great records with Converge and it's not going to stop anytime soon. This vegan brings everything he has to offer to Converge and has proven that if you give him something, he will conquer it.

Metalship : Kurt, you’re a busy musician with Converge, how has it affected your personal life?

For better or for worse, music is my social life. most of my friends are people i've met through the band or by recording other bands. so touring and recording, despite being actual work, is the way that i get to spend time with my friends. and because i have to book almost every day of my life months in advance, i don't have much time for being spontaneous and spending time with other friends.

Metalship : How is life on tour with Converge and what’s the most memorable tour you’ve been on off the top of your head.

I'm old, so the tour i remember most is the most recent tour, which was in Europe with Kylesa, Gaza, and Kvelertak.

Metalship : What bands would like to tour with in the future?

Grinderman, 1.6 band, The Cure, Darkthrone, Swans, Prince, Spiritualized, Neurosis, and Die Antwoord.

Metalship : On stage performing, do you usually think about unusual stuff or do you enjoy just watching the crazy hardcore kids?

It varies from show to show. Sometimes, I'm just trying to play well, other times I'm laughing at bad stage dives, and other times i'm thinking about my broken equipment and what i need to do to fix it.

Metalship : There is a video on the internet of a fight that broke out during one of your songs, have there been a handful of fights you’ve seen over the years or any memorable stage moments?

That video is taken a bit out of context, and not typical of our shows. if you notice me in that video, i start packing up my gear as soon as things go bad. unfortunately, a lot of times, diversity is tight spaces creates unnecessary conflict between people. so once in a while, things go bad.

Metalship : Converge has a great discography, what record would you say was your favorite?

The newest record is always the record the best personifies who I am at any given moment, so right now, I'd have to say "Axe to Fall."

Metalship : Converge released "Axe to Fall" not to long ago, what is in store for Converge for the future?

We'll write more music when the inspiration strikes, then put out a record and play some shows.

Metalship : How is your sleeping and eating habits like while on tour?

It varies a lot from day to day. you never know when you're going to get a good meal or get good sleep, so you learn to stock up and take advantage of these things when you can. I'm vegan and everyone else is vegetarian, so we always make it a point to stock up at healthy places whenever possible. it's too easy to eat junk on tour, so it requires a real effort not to. Sometimes i check out the "vegout" app on my iphone to find local vegetarian restaurants and health food stores when I'm in an unfamiliar town.

Metalship : What are some of your favorite records that are in your collection as of right now?

I haven't bought a record in a while. i mostly listen to shuffle mode on my ipod. With the amount of intense music listening i do every day in my studio, i don't tend to listen to records a lot in my free time.

Metalship : Who would you say has inspired you the most through out your musician career?

All sorts of things. I've never been content with who i am, what i do, and what I'm capable of, so I'm always striving to do more and be more than i am. I've also always been dissatisfied with a lot of things about the way the world works. it could be politics, religion, relationships, family stuff or whatever. There seems to be a steady flow of inspiration and i never have writer's block for too long.

Metalship : What has been the biggest challenge with Converge so far throughout touring and performing?

When you're in a band for a long time, people grow and change, and move away, so it's always a challenge to find common ground and find the time to keep creating together as well get older. Our lives outside of the band develop in different directions from each other.

Metalship : What is something that would surprise Converge fans?

That we like to smile, laugh, and have fun. We make music for ourselves, not them.

Metalship : What is your biggest fear in life

Being bored.

Metalship : What is some advice you would give to all the kids out there that are having tough times in life right now?

Keep your chin up, don't let anyone tell you that you can't do something you want to do. Also, recognize that you don't know who you're going to be in a year or five years or ten years, so don't do too much now that will inhibit your options for the future.
