Interview with Michael Stancombe

Guitarist Michael Stancombe is hard at work putting in time with his new project, Floridian black metal group Kult ov Azazel and his other project Tenebrous. Michael is putting a lot of effort to make Kult of Azazel’s and Tenebrous upcoming releases as well respected as the previous material. Kult ov Azazel’s “Destroying the Sacred” is the most recent album to date and has done excellent as well as Tenebrous' 2009 full length “Opus Magnum.”

Metalship : How is it going right now being in Kult ov Azazel, Tenebrous at the same time?

So far so good! Our schedules don't conflict much, Tenebrous is not quite as active as a live act right now. Both bands are long time friends and have been session members for each other on many occasions. Xaphan is also the live guitar Player in Tenebrous.

Metalship : I read that you joined the band (Kult ov Azazel) in 2009. Have you brought anything to the table for Kult ov Azazel that you can tell us?

Thats correct. I'm not sure if I can say I have added anything to the band at this point other than (I hope) a good stage presence. I have been working on material for the next K.o.A. album granted it meets approval ha ha! None the less, its an honor to play for such a killer and well respected band!

Metalship : Do you remember your first black metal experience? Also who are some of your personal influences?

Black Metal as far as music goes was Emperor's "In the Nightside Eclipse"!!! That album is still in my top 3 black metal albums. A true master work!!!
Influences--well obviously Emperor. Graveland, Burzum, Darkthrone, Thorns, Satyricon (the golden age of black metal). My favorite though would have to be Tartaros, which you will hear more of that influence on the album we are working on now.

Metalship : What is the most memorable show that you can remember?

Gathering of Shadows 06'. VJS and I were both also plaing in Demoncy that year and Ixithra was playing guitar in Tenebrous. Both bands played the G.O.S. that year and the atmosphere was complete perfection despite J.B. Bauer from Full Moon Prod. talking shit to us in between songs and then having the nerve to approach us about it after. We all ended up just beating the shit out of him and no body seemed to care because they knew what a loser he was! We also had cauldrons filled with dead animals that were burning on either side of the stage! The smell was.... intoxicating to say the least!

Metalship : Where would you like to tour that you have not been?

Europe!!!!!!

Metalship : Are there any upcoming tours or shows you would like to share at this time?

Tenebrous will be playing Sept. 11th and 12th in N.Y. and N.J. with Summon. I am very excited about these shows. Signature Riff is putting it all together and hopefully we will continue to work with them for future shows! Truly dedicated company, Top Shelf!

Metalship : Could you share with us some of your favorite albums from your personal collection?

Every Danzig album!!! Laibach "Nova Acropola" and Opus Dei, Diary of Dreams "Negredo." I actually listen to a lot of industrial/goth music. We will be here forever if I go on. ha!

Metalship : When you’re playing live with Kult ov Azazel, what are you thinking about, are you thinking about the fans, listening to your own music or anything else?

When I am playing in K.O.A. I am focused on the message and energy of whatever song we are playing at the moment!

Metalship : What is different playing with Kult ov Azazel than playing with Tenebrous?

Kult ov Azazel is much more aggressive and Tenebrous has more Atmosphere. Tenebrous is much more personal for me and at times I dont even feel like I am there. I black out during some shows and actually can not remember parts of the actual performance. K.O.A. has a much more raw and primal feel for me.

Metalship : What are your future plans with both of the bands?

I have written some material for the new K.O.A. but am mainly focused on the new Tenebrous album that VJS and I are working on now. This album will be more layered than our previous releases and will actually have keys and strings even clean vocal chants etc. I have spoke to Charmond Grimloch (Tartaros, ex-Emperor) about having him produce the album and am just waiting for him to be available. Also we will have a guest appearance from Charles Hedger (Imperial Vengeance, Cradle of Filth) doing some guitar work, which I am very excited about!

Metalship : Are there any bands that you would like to tour again with, and what are some bands that you would like to tour with in the future?

We have played with many Fantastic bands over the years--Teratism, Grand Belials Key, Horna, NightBringer, BloodStorm, the list goes on but I would really like to tour with new bands. Nachtmystium, Imperial Vengeance, Sothis, to name a few. But would definitely kill for some European dates!!!

Metalship : Is there you would like to share with any of us to wrap this up with?

I'd just like to thank you for this interview and send my blackest regards to all the bands we have toured with, mags that shit talked and praised us, Forever plagued and Deathgasm Records. And all who support what we do!
