Neurosis started as a hardcore/sludge band in the mid-eighties, and then went into more of an ambient/tribal direction with later releases. Releases such as Enemy of the Sun (1993), Souls at Zero (1992) and Through Times of Grace (1999) revealed odd couplings of sludge metal and classical instrumentation. This unusual style, in particular the metal aspect, has influenced numerous bands in a new sub-genre, post hardcore. Although the band currently releases albums through its own label, Neurot Recordings,
Neurosis issued several albums via Relapse Records.
Neurosis rarely plays live, but embarked upon several high profile tours in the '90s including Ozzfest '97 and an opening stint for
Pantera.
