Forging together Kurbads

It’s been seven years since Skyforger released any new material. Their latest album, Kurbads, is a fist-pumping, horn-drinking blend of thrash and extreme folk metal. In other words, if Kreator and Finntroll had a baby, that baby’s name would be Skyforger. This is somewhat appropriate, since the bands native Latvia falls somewhere between Germany and Finland.

The album is a bit of a departure from their previous material, which relied more on folk and black metal, nevertheless it is supremely enjoyable from beginning to end. Not to mention, it’s educational! The albums stronger thrash elements make sense, seeing as the concept album reflects the tale of Kurbads, an archetypal hero born of mare. The heroes story is similar to that of an Achilles character and weaves an epic tale of war and adventure. Although the lyrics are in their native language, the music definitely peaked my interest in finding out more about Latvian myth.

I do have to rag on the cover art a little, though. As much as I’d rather not judge an album by its cover, if I saw this in the store I would wonder why they stole my 7th grade notebook doodles and used them for cover art. Since a member of the band executed it though, they deserve hats off in that regard.

There are a few moments later in the album that are pretty forgettable. For instance, the song “The Last Battle,” actually feels a bit like the band has just fought for days and is a bit exhausted. They pick it back up with the title track and final song though, a catchy melody that feels a lot like a drinking chant.

Overall the accordion and vocals break up the pummeling guitars and beats really well. This band would be most excellent to see live, and probably a blast to go raiding with. If you’ve never heard Skyforger and are okay with some thrash with your folk in the morning, this is the album for you my friend.
