Rhapsody of Fire is by far one of the best symphonic/power metal bands going. They incorporate speed, style, heaviness and magic in every single one of their songs. Now this insane act have released their 8th album entitled
The Frozen Tears of Angels, and with it comes some of the best
Rhapsody of Fire songs in the band's back catalog. When you’re a band the size of ROG, being this good pays. Bring on the gods of war and unleash the heavy metal thunder.
The album is not only the first of two albums released in 2010, it also marks the band at their finest hour. A typical
Rhapsody of Fire song shows off talented musicianship. Everything from vocals to bass, guitar to drums is perfect. Showing just how diverse a bunch of metal heads from Italy can be. There are so many twists and turns in this album. You never know what is round the corner. But one thing’s for sure, if it comes from
Rhapsody of Fire, you will love it. The riffs are heavy, the solos soar and the vocals shatter glass. Some of the best moments are or on the tracks: "Sea of Fate," "Crystal Moonlight," "Reign of Terror" and "Raging Starfire."
Metal Heads should easily pay good money to see these few songs plus some others live. "Sea of Fate" has the most insane guitar- tap solo which will ignite any rock or metal fan into a head banging frenzy. Songs like "Crystal Moonlight" are good because they really show the band's symphonic side. Their use of keyboards and synthesizers makes magical and mysterious sounds. Although "Reign of Terror" takes a while to get into, Luca Turilli shows axemanship, especially before the ghoulish choir kicks in. What to say about "Raging Starfire" apart from it being one of power metal’s finest tunes. The vocals are beautiful, to say the least, and the band literally sounds like a
rhapsody of fire.
Unfortunately, nothing is perfect and a few things have to let this
shining gem down. The oddly entitled "Danza Di Fuoco E Ghiaccio" is a dip in this continuously fast paced album. It slows the album down, killing the listener's adrenaline
rush dead. Come on guys, stick to what you do best. Also the final track "The Frozen Tears of Angels" is a twelve-minute long piece which sums of
Rhapsody of Fire's amazing album. Unfortunately, this song is a repetitive medley of previous ROF riffs.
Despite these two tracks,
Rhapsody of Fire have managed to deliver us a beautiful, tear jerking collection of nine tracks, which if I was asked what is the best ROF album I would hand any person a copy of this.
Rhapsody of Fire is clearly the leading light in power metal.
