For nearly forty years, Rob
Halford has established the parameters of metal singers voice. Whether with
Judas Priest, Fight, his solo project
Halford, Rob has been known for his flawless technique, his amazing power and intensity.
It was therefore reasonable to believe that Rob
Halford had the qualities required to create an album of traditional Christmas songs.
So today we will be taking a look at that Rob's new album "Winter Songs" a collection of holiday songs.
First stroke of genius: The choice of songs. Rob was able to make an intelligent choice among the hundreds of songs from the popular repertoire of Christmas. Admit that Rob singing "Rudolph the red nose reindeer" would have sounded a little odd coming from the metal god. Add the fact that few people believe that Christmas and Heavy Metal can go together. So Rob
Halford has chosen songs where he could use his voice up which helps the credibility of each piece.
Second stroke of genius: The songs themselves. Yes, the album is metal, but not "overmetalized" This means that despite the extraordinary work of adaptation that
Halford did with Roy Z, the fact remains that certain songs such as "Come All Ye Faithful "simply can not be done on a frenzied riff. One will need to Keep the traditional element, the side majestic and grand. So, Rob was able to ease off the accelerator when the situation required. Ultimately, the result is excellent.
Otherwise, the solos and guitar riffs are stunning, the drum is strong and the bass guitar diverse and supports the other instruments.
Unless you're a huge fan of Christmas songs, some parts are a little less known so you might learn songs you didn’t know before and expand your repertoire.
The production is impeccable as always thanks in part to longtime collaborator of Rob
Halford: Roy Z. For this album, Rob has used two regular musicians of his
Halford project: “Metal” Mike Chlasciak to ensure the guitar and also Bobby Jarzombek, drummer emeritus. Roy Z also participates as a guitarist and bass work was entrusted to Mike Davis. Ed Roth complete with keyboards
In addition to the classics, Rob also offers some new material of its own which is equal in quality to the rest of the album.
The sound and style remains typical of the
Halford band so if you like Rob solo stuff, you'll be at ease from the first song.
Winter Songs is 10 well crafted titles that will put you in the mood for the holidays while remaining metal.
