In Disentombs case, you can’t be too heavy. Their new album - Sunken Chambers of Nephilim is a prime example of how to awake the foul creatures of hell. With the correct mix of volume, heaviness and pure darkness, Disentomb have managed to create the lord of all demonic records, capable of becoming possibly the heaviest album we could hear in 2011. Hold on tight as Satan’s minions are here to blow your eardrums with brutal and aggressive force!
Brutal death metal is not everyone’s cup of tea, but Disentomb manage to show through their music that extreme metal can be catchy. Sure it may be all screaming and growling, but they do it in a way were you can remember the tune easily. For example “Purity Severed by the Antediluvian” is memorable for its odd timings a question and answer session between the very low guitars and the growly vocals of the singer. Also “Inhaling a Vomitous Iniquity” offers the listener a very slick bass riff to indulge near to the end of the song giving the music a groovier element to it. Musically it’s what you would get if you crossed
Cannibal Corpse with Whitechapel. Very technical in places but this technicality does not compromise the aggression.
What is great about Disentomb is that they take into account their death metal forefathers. They have clearly researched into the history of death metal, taking leaves out of the books of bands like:
Cannibal Corpse,
Carcass,
Morbid Angel, Death and many others - thinking about riffs, lyrics, artwork and even song titles. You can see this when you take into consideration the track “Incinerating the Angelic”. The title in its self is pretty metal and when you delve deeper into the lyrics we find something very dark and deep in the form of these words:
“Rapture burning deep into their flesh, followers of the cross witness obliteration before their eyes, erupting
in flames, robes melt into swollen flesh, onto a burning, dying Eden” Now if that isn’t proper death metal, I don’t know what is.
Unfortunately, Disentomb need to add something special to their music so they are not known as ‘That other death metal band’. Most of the songs may sound similar but from individual songs we can see that Disentomb could be one of the best modern death metal bands the world has to offer.
