Fans of symphonic metal take notice.
Delain’s
Lucidity is a collaboration of some of Europe’s best symphonic/gothic metal players.
Delain’s debut full-length was originally released by Roadrunner in 2006, so fans of the group probably already know about the myriad talent involved here, but thanks to Sensory Records folks like me who didn’t hear it the first time have a chance to now enjoy this monumental recording.
Because
Delain was formed by
Within Temptation keyboardist, Martijn Westerholt, the Dutch group already has its feet firmly planted in this hugely popular scene (in European, anyway). The musicians involved here include Marco Hietala (
Nightwish,
Tarot), George Oosthoek (Orphanage), Sharon den Ade (
Within Temptation) and Liv Kristine (Leaves’ Eyes, ex-Theatre of Tragedy).
Lucidity also includes choirs, an orchestra and a cello player. Not that
Delain needs much help. The depressive lyrics and blossoming (often-somber) atmosphere combined with Wessels’ vocals prove the band can hold its own. However, the this compilation of musicians greatly enhances
Lucidity, making it a much better listen than the 2009 follow up,
April Rain. Still, core member Westerholt deserves praise for piecing together this monolithic project.
Lucidity includes some of the most beautiful voices found in this form of music. Sharon den Ade on “No Compromise” and Liv Kristine on “A Day for Ghost” showcase voices that are definitely easy on the ears, but it’s their positioning between Marco’s high-rising power metal vocals and Oosthoek’s death grunts that give these songs and others an interesting contrast. Moreover, the bottom-heavy, churning guitar work of “Silhouette of a Dancer” and palm-muted chugging on “Shattered” rectify the problem of power metal frequently being powerless.
While
April Rain, didn’t have as much to offer as
Lucidity, both albums caught this death metal fan’s interest.
Delain is one of the better groups in this scene. In their music, they find a good formula for presenting atmosphere, pop-worthy vocals and heavy guitar licks. If you didn’t check out
Lucidity the first time, do yourself a favor and check out these guys and gals this time.
